Escape room industry statistics 2026

84% of US escape rooms carry a Google rating of 4.8 or higher, and the median venue has 736 reviews. A new room does not compete against a 4.2 with a handful of reviews; it competes against a wall of 4.9s. This page collects the numbers an operator, investor or journalist needs in one place: Google ratings, review volumes and owner reply rates from a benchmark database of 2,060 rated escape rooms in 34 countries, plus the facility counts, revenue and cost figures from the few published sources that state their method.

Escape room industry statistics are measures of the size, structure and performance of location-based escape game venues: how many facilities exist, how they are rated and reviewed, what they charge, what they cost to build and how often they close. Two kinds of numbers appear below and they should not be mixed. Ratings, review counts and reply rates come from Google Business Profiles collected into a benchmark database, which is a large sample rather than a census. Facility counts, revenue and closure rates come from published industry reports, each named in the Sources section with its year.

Where the ratings data comes from

The rating, review and reply figures on this page come from the SpiniX benchmark database, a collection of Google Business Profiles built by scrapers that sweep Google Maps city by city and store each venue’s category, rating, review count, star distribution and owner reply count. As of September 2026 it holds 2,060 escape rooms with a Google rating across 34 countries, including 963 US venues, 955 of them rated. Room Escape Artist counts just over 2,000 US facilities, so the US sample covers close to half the market.

Coverage is uneven. Cities that were swept are complete; cities that were not are missing entirely. State and country figures therefore describe the venues in the database, not every venue that exists. Three definitions apply throughout: “rated” means the profile shows a rating; “share at 4.8 or higher” is the percentage of rated venues at or above 4.8; “unanswered” is the share of a venue’s reviews with no owner reply, computed only for the 550 US venues where reply counts were collected.

US market size and structure

The US market has stopped growing by addition. Room Escape Artist’s December 2025 report counts just over 2,000 facilities, the same level as 2023 and 2024, holding about 7,800 individual games between them. During 2025, 8.86% of facilities closed, an improvement on the 10.46% that closed in 2024, and because the total stayed flat, openings now roughly match closures. The longer view is harsher: 48% of all facilities that opened since 2017 have since shut.

Revenue is estimated from bookings rather than audited. At about 40,000 bookings a week and an average booking of $150, the US industry takes in roughly $300 million a year. That is a Room Escape Artist estimate with its method stated; larger figures that circulate for the “global escape room market” rarely say how they were built and are not repeated here.

Chains are a small share of the market. The five largest operators run 243 locations between them, about 12% of US facilities; the rest are independents.

Google ratings: the distribution

Escape rooms are the best-rated venue type in the database. Of 955 rated US escape rooms, 38.6% hold a perfect 5.0, 71.6% sit at 4.9 or above and 84.3% at 4.8 or above. Only 1.2% are rated below 4.0.

The comparison with other entertainment venues shows how unusual that is. Bowling alleys, which serve leagues, parties and walk-ins across long opening hours, average 4.27 with only 3% at 4.8 or higher. To see how many five-star reviews it takes to move a specific venue from 4.7 to a displayed 4.8, use the star rating calculator.

Review volume

The median US escape room has 736 Google reviews. A quarter have more than 2,261, one in ten more than 5,335, and 41.5% have passed 1,000. Worldwide the median is 448, the top quarter starts at 1,322 and the top tenth at 3,862. The 963 US venues hold 1,910,563 reviews between them; 94.0% of those are five-star and 1.4% are one-star.

Rating rises with volume. Venues with fewer than 100 reviews average 4.70; venues with 2,500 or more average 4.95. Part of that is survivorship, since weak rooms close before they reach 2,500 reviews, and part is that a review flow which runs every session produces both the volume and the rating.

Owner replies

Reply counts were collected for 550 US escape rooms. Across them, 50.5% of reviews on the average profile have no owner reply. 16.0% of venues never reply at all, 49.1% reply to at least half of their reviews and 27.5% reply to 90% or more.

Venues that reply to at least half of their reviews average 4.93 with a median of 1,564 reviews; the rest average 4.86 with a median of 852. That is a correlation, not a controlled test: the operators who reply are also the operators who ask, so the reply habit is a marker of a venue that manages its profile, not a proven cause of the higher rating.

Escape room statistics by country

The United States is the largest market in the database, followed by the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands. The UK sample is small next to the market: the directory Escape the Review lists around 2,000 UK escape rooms in its 2025 ranking, so the 259 UK venues here are a sample of the larger cities. A Canadian directory lists 687 rooms; IBISWorld counts 166 escape room businesses in Australia with AUD 93.0 million in 2025 revenue.

Two patterns stand out. The Gulf venues carry the deepest review volume, with a median of 1,240 reviews in Saudi Arabia and two thirds of venues past 1,000, and the Nordic and Dutch venues the shallowest, with medians under 220 and almost none past 1,000. The US, UK, Germany and Hungary cluster at 4.80 to 4.86; the Netherlands, at 4.58, is the only large sample below 4.65. Hungarian operators are the most responsive in the sample, with 8.6% of reviews unanswered and 92% of venues replying to at least half.

Escape room statistics by US state

California has the most venues in the database and the shallowest review depth among the big states: a median of 386 reviews against 1,056 in Florida and 1,369 in Texas. It also has the highest share of unanswered reviews, 55.5%, and the lowest share of venues at 4.8 or higher among the top states, 78.5%. Pennsylvania and Washington post the highest average ratings at 4.91 and 4.90. The states with the most venues here, California, Florida, Texas, North Carolina and Illinois, match the top five that Xola lists from directory counts, with New York and Pennsylvania swapping in for the last two spots there.

Prices, group size and build costs

Private bookings in the US typically run $28 to $38 per player for a 60-minute game, with the low end in smaller towns and the high end in dense cities; Xola’s directory-based summary puts the typical price near $30 per person per hour. Groups of four to six players are the operator consensus for a typical booking, though no published survey measures it, and 60 minutes remains the standard game length.

Build costs span a wide range. A lean, owner-built room can open for $10,000 to $20,000; a professionally designed set with custom electronics runs $30,000 to $50,000 or more per room, and a two- to three-room facility needs roughly 2,000 to 4,000 square feet (Delta Capital Group, 2026). The how to start an escape room business guide turns those ranges into a worked break-even example, and the escape room business plan post covers the financial section a lender will read first.

4.86 across 955 rated US escape rooms and 4.80 across 2,060 rated venues in 34 countries, with a median of 4.9 in both. 84% of US escape rooms sit at 4.8 or higher, so a 4.7 is below average.

How many Google reviews does a typical escape room have?

The median US escape room has 736; a quarter have more than 2,261 and one in ten more than 5,335. Worldwide the median is 448. Rating rises with volume, from 4.70 under 100 reviews to 4.95 at 2,500 or more.

How much revenue does the US escape room industry make?

Roughly $300 million a year, from about 40,000 bookings a week at an average of $150 (Room Escape Artist, December 2025). No audited industry-wide figure exists.

8.86% of US facilities closed during 2025, down from 10.46% in 2024, and 48% of facilities opened since 2017 have since closed (Room Escape Artist). The national count is flat because openings now roughly match closures.
